In this weekly feature on Clicks & Mortar, we bring you the most notable or interesting property we can find in our service area. This week’s featured over-the-top property is:
Charleston is known as a traditional kind of place, but a scant 20 minutes away from the center of town, on Daniel Island, sits this contemporary showplace. Even though one of America’s most beautiful historic districts is within easy reach, the amenities of Daniel Island are sufficient to keep you from having to take frequent “trips to town.” Daniel Island has won accolades for the quality of its development, and 473 Creek Landing Street fits perfectly into that legacy.
Although there’s no picture of the entry facade, the listing photos show a gorgeous backside visible from Ralston Creek, not far from its mouth at the Wando River. Not satisfied with this incomplete description, I searched the address on Google Maps only to find the front presenting an oddly traditional melange of mansard roof, bracketed eaves and mullioned windows somewhat at odds with the mod look creekside. The unexpected 1970s resin and bronze entrance doors are pretty groovy, I must say. Luckily, the interiors don’t display the same mismatched sensibility.
The inside of 473 is unencumbered by the trappings of more traditional Southern homes. The simple, bright, clean aesthetic feels outright refreshing in this humid island setting. Venetian plaster walls were finished throughout, as were reveals in place of moldings. Italian limestone and wenge wood floors keep things cool underfoot and are a breeze to clean when things get sandy. Speaking of islands, check out the monster one in the kitchen! It’s deserving of its own zip code.
The star of the home may well be the rear. It’s graciously outfitted with double loggias that are shaded by deep overhangs, perfect for those concerned about new freckles. And let’s not overlook the built-in bar meant for perfecting your martini-making skills. A mosaic tiled hot tub spills into the infinity pool, which in turn spills into a placid view of Ralston Creek. Clearly, it’s a hard knock life on Daniel Island.
