Atlanta's Unique Kroger Names

Posted on 11, May 2016 by Ryann Hogan

If you are new to Atlanta, you may have been left scratching your head when you hear someone reference "Murder Kroger" or "Disco Kroger".  While those are the most commonly known nicknamed Krogers, the trend has stretched across the city. Ever wondered what other Kroger's in Atlanta have received nicknames?

Murder Kroger: 725 Ponce de Leon Ave NE The most famous of the monikered Krogers, the Poncey-Highland location got its nickname thanks to several murders that occurred in the parking lot (in 1995 and 2015).  This Kroger is currently getting a major facelift in the form or condos, coworking space and shops, but we have a feeling the moniker will stick.

Disco Kroger: 3330 Piedmont Road NE The Buckhead Kroger received its nickname in the 1980's when the Piedmont Road shopping center was also home to Euro-style nightclub "Limelight". Although the club has long since closed, Disco Kroger lives on, and Limelight is memorialized by a mural on the side of the building.  However, the shopping center is currently undergoing a renovation. (Think: more condos for Buckhead).

Stinky Kroger: 900 GA-120 Grocery store next to a sewage treatment plant? Sure, but it might earn you a less than flattering nickname. The Cobb County Kroger also is known for having a large pharmacy, but it's hard to overcome a smelly reputation.

Hipster Kroger: 1225 Caroline Street NE  Skinny jeans for everyone! The Edgewoood Reyoldstown Kroger is known for having a high number of young urbanites as their client base.

Kosher Kroger: 2205 Lavista Road NE The Toco Hills Kroger, sometimes called ToKroger, gets its nickname from the largely Jewish population in Toco Hills. Congregation Beth Shalom is nearby, and accordingly, this Kroger has a large kosher selection.

Newly Bougie Kroger: 3871 Peachtree Road The Buckhead/Brookhaven Kroger received a major facelift in 2013 that left this Kroger feeling... fancier than the others. Their cheese man is known Buckhead-wide as THE leading expert on which dry-cured sausage pairs best with your aged manchego.
