Decatur -- Progressive Mecca With Small-Town Charm

Posted on 26, June 2009 by csadmin

Decatur is an independent city which means it's not actually part of Atlanta. Nevertheless, it ranks as one of the most sought-after close-in suburbs. Decatur manages to maintain a quaint small-town feel that seems a world away from nearby Atlanta, yet it's just a few minutes' drive or train ride from downtown. The city center is situated around an old-fashioned town square flanked by City Hall and the DeKalb County courthouse. Some of the funkiest bars and most unique restaurants in the metropolitan area border the square, all in shouting distance of one another, and independent shops round out the mix. Tree-lined streets radiate out from the downtown square into pleasant residential neighborhoods characterized by well-kept green lawns and rocking-chair front porches--the sort of place you'd fully expect to find a lemonade stand. Downtown Decatur's easily accessible MARTA stop and eminently walkable landscape make it a model for sustainable living.

Decatur's freethinking residents have a reputation as being quite progressive, prompting some to affectionately call it "the Berkeley of the South." One of Decatur's most impressive aspects is the high level of civic involvement among its residents; citizens are actively engaged with the local government, and in turn, the public administration is extremely responsive to citizen needs. The area is also home to Agnes Scott college and as such has a large student population, while families are attracted to its excellent school system and laid-back lifestyle. The community is close-knit and active, with plenty of concerts, events, and festivals taking place throughout the year. Decatur offers everything people love about small towns while keeping the benefits of city life at arm's reach.
