Kiawah Island is kind of a big deal. As in, it hard to think of another spot on South Carolina’s coast with a larger concentration of uber-luxury residences and envy appeal. Naturally, it makes a great place to search around for an OTTP, and it didn’t take us long to find a humdinger. 109 Flyaway Drive sits within the exclusive Vanderhorst Plantation, which also holds behinds its gates the renowned Osprey Point golf course. Not only does this island getaway feature every, its LEED Silver certification (the only such achievement on the island) means you won’t feel a tinge of guilt for living large, Kiawah style.
The 8 bed/9.5 bath home’s classic Shingle Style architecture feels perfectly appropriate for the laid back surroundings. Just to get it out of the way, the quasi-lighthouse looking appendage in the photo serves as a 3 bedroom guest quarter - sweet! The Atlantic Ocean serves as an impressive backyard, and of course you have your own private boardwalk to lead you to the waves. A refreshingly modest saline pools stands as an ocean water stand-in; because when you think about it, how many aquatic animals are using that body of water as a lavatory? Okay, maybe you shouldn’t think about it.
Inside is a melange of calming blues, white, and wood tones. It’s overly common for a bathroom to be described as “spa-like,” but here’s an instance where you get that serenity throughout the entire home. For a property with an eight figure price tag, little about it comes off as ostentatious. Well maybe the eight car garage is a tad showy, but we’ll let it slide. It’s more about the little things that count, like extra thick moldings, well placed windows, and thoughtfully designed entertaining spaces matter more than pomp and circumstance here. And the two acre plot reinforces what’s really the focus of any great island home: the beautiful surroundings.
