Do grout removal tips pique your interest? Are you losing sleep due to your inability to choose the right paint colors for your home’s exterior? Then you need to save the date for the Decatur Old House Fair being held February 18th! It promises a day of inspiration, education, and fascination for those who love homes of a certain age. You could think of it as Dragon*Con for the “This Old House” crowd.
Here’s what you’ll find at the DOHF. First, the big names. One is Roger Moss, considered one of the nation’s premier color consultants. This guy knows his visible spectrum: he’s served as a graduate professor for the historic preservation program at the University of Pennsylvania and has authored a few books on the topic.
For $25, you can get a one-on-one 20 minute consultation with Moss to help discern what colors would look best on your home. Not enough time? Luckily, you have the option of scheduling two sessions back to back. The other old house celeb is Judi Marks, who you’ll probably recognize from various HGTV programs. She’ll be the host for the seminar “Fun Projects to Enhance Your Home.”
Speaking of seminars, this year they’re being broken up into two categories: the usual hour long sessions, and “short bites” which last only 30 minutes. Some of the longer ones cover topics like researching your home’s style, restoring wood windows, the history of paint colors, and improving energy efficiency. If you’re an old house nut like me, these workshops probably sound fun and/or interesting. We’re strange like that. Info on water heaters, insulation, and chimney restoration are a few of the topics covered in the short bites.
Of course an old house expo wouldn’t be complete without a full army of service providers, or “exhibitors”, ready to hawk the latest product you didn’t even know you needed for your money pit. Browse a well-rounded group that includes landscapers, architects, manufacturers, and the like. Perhaps the greatest benefit is the chance for camaraderie with those who see the beauty in time-worn moldings and creaky floors. Keep fighting the good fight!
The Decatur Old House Fair will be held February 18th from 9am to 5pm at the Courtyard by Marriott Atlanta Decatur Downtown/Emory & Conference Center (whew that was a mouthful!). Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.
