Georgia Weekend Getaways: Helen

Looking to escape the city for a weekend? Look no further, we have the answer! Just 2 hours north of Atlanta, you'll find the German-inspired mountain town of Helen, Ga. These are just a few of our favorite things about Helen, so get some ideas and head out on your own weekend getaway!

A visit to Helen in the summer wouldn’t be complete without a tube trip down the Chattahoochee River. Helen Tubing and Cool River Tubing have a variety of inexpensive packages. Tubers can choose from long or short river rides and can also enjoy picnic and buy souvenirs at the outpost.

Carriage Rides
Take a relaxing horse-drawn carriage ride through the beautiful Alpine Village. Alpine Carriage Company provides all types of carriage rides, including family tours and romantic rides for two. They to accommodate your every need by offering pick-up services, special scenic rides and rides of varying lengths.

Don’t miss the natural beauty of Helen and the surrounding areas – get out and take a hike. Anna Ruby Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Georgia, is accessible by a short half-mile hike up a paved walkway. A longer 4.5 mile hike for experienced hikers connects Anna Ruby Falls with Unicoi State Park. You can also drive to Unicoi to enjoy 7.5 miles of trails that are great for hiking, fishing, swimming and mountain biking.

Gold Mining
The North Georgia Mountains are the home of America’s first gold rush, and your family can join the tradition by panning for gold and gems. Dukes Creek Gem & Mining Company has a variety of mining choices, and their knowledgable staff will make mining an experience you won't soon forget.

Charlemagne's Kingdom
The museum at Charlemagne's Kingdom is home to the largest model railroad in Georgia. The scaled down Alpine model landscape features over 400 feet of railroad track, electric trains, 22 foot tall mountains, lakes, rivers and villages with replicas of German buildings. The village is complete with over 5,000 hand painted figures.


Hofer's of Helen
If you're looking for an authentic Bavarian meal, Hofer's of Helen is the place to go. Cakes, pastries, breads and other bakery goods are some of their specialties, along with their breakfast and lunch menus. After your meal, head to the gift shop for unique imported foods and traditional German gifts.

North Georgia Barbeque Co.
If Bavarian food is not your thing, head to North Georgia Barbeque Co. for some of the best barbeque in North Georgia. The menu boasts your basic BBQ favorites and some delicious side dishes. Keep in mind there is no indoor seating, so they're often closed during inclement weather.

Cafe International
Cafe International is one of Helen's most popular restaurants. The patio overlooking the Chattahoochee River is a great place to enjoy your meal. With a wide variety of menu selections, you'll likely find something for everyone in the family. The Cafe also has many international beer options.

Hansel & Gretel Candy Kitchen
At Hansel & Gretel you will see fudge being made on marble tables while another candy-maker is preparing whipped cream caramel for chocolate turtles and caramel apples. Sample some of the delicious candy in the store or ship some home to enjoy after your trip.


Helendorf River Inn & Conference Center
Located in downtown Helen on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, the Helendorf Inn has plenty to offer. Besides the great location, the riverfront rooms are full of top-notch accommodations. With a 250+ person meeting/event space, the Helendorf is great for a family reunion, business trip or a weekend escape.

Heidi Motel & Windmill Suites
Designed in true Bavarian fashion, the Heidi Motel will make you feel like you've been transported to another country. It provides old-world charm with the accommodations and amenities you're looking for. Located just a short walk from the center of town, the Heidi Motel is one of Helen's oldest and most well-known landmarks.

Mountain Cabin
If you're looking to get out of town, a mountain cabin rental is a great alternative. There are plenty of rental companies that can provide you with a variety of cabin options. Alpine Mountain Cabins and Bavarian Brook Rentals are just two of the rentals companies that can find you the perfect mountain cabin in Helen.
