Spring Cleaning Do’s and Don’ts

Repeat after me: I will not put off spring cleaning this year. We know that the transition from winter to spring and summer can be tough on your home. Between picnics, beach trips and BBQs, who knows what kind of dust and dirty finds it ways into your home during the warmer months. Get a jump start on your spring clean with these do’s and don’ts.

Take it one area at a time.

Clean your carpets by steam cleaning them. Also, make sure you are applying a carpet protector. This will help protect against dirt, stains, and everyday wear and tear.

Protect your wood floors. A good rule is to always clean your floors last. If you do them first, then all of the fallen dust and dirt from cleaning other pieces of furniture around it will ruin all of the hard work you just did. One step forward, just to go one step back!

Clean your tiles with a cleaner that has a “neutral pH”. A good homemade mixture for tile cleaner is baking soda and water. No need to break the bank buying a load of cleaners!

Clean your oven, sink, and dishwasher very well. After all this is the trio all of your food goes through!

Clean out your closet of any clothes or accessories that are unwanted. A good rule of thumb is to get rid of anything you have not worn in the past year, chances are you will not wear it this year then. No, you are not going to need that shirt you have not put on in two years. This is also a good time to do what you always say you’ll do but never get around to… organize your closet. Putting your clothes into an organized pattern off of color or occasion will save you time when getting ready.

Clean your outside furniture. With the warm weather approaching, this is a key time to get your outdoor furniture ready to use for the summer! A good way to clean these is to wipe them down with warm water and a small amount of detergent. Then just hose off the solution.  Easy!

Take your winter sweaters off the hanger, and put then in a storage bin.

Try and do all of it at once. If you try and tackle your list all at once, chances are you won’t clean as well as you needed in the first place. Doing it all at once is also very overwhelming!

Use the wrong cleaning products when cleaning your carpet. Shampooing your carpet has been found to leave a residue after cleaning, which makes it no longer the preferred way to clean your carpet.  Cleaners with a high pH cleaning agent can actually strip the carpet of its stain blockers, which causes it to resoil very fast.

Mop your floors every week. This actually can ruin them over time! Instead, you should wet-clean them once every few months and spot clean when needed.

Clean your tiles with mixtures containing acid or bleach. Avoid wax based cleaners and oil- based detergents when you are cleaning your tile as well.  Also, you do not want to use a cleaning agent that contains color.

Mix bleach with any acidic cleaners to clean your oven, sink, or dishwasher. This can create harmful mixtures that can result in health problems.

Let your winter sweaters sit on the hangers all spring and summer, this is what causes them to be stretched out and droopy on the shoulders. Also, it creates more room in your closet!
