Donut get us wrong, we love swinging by the nearest Dunkin’ for an iced coffee and box of munchkins, and we’ve definitely turned the car around (more than once) when a “Hot Now” sign lit up. Over the past couple of years, however, specialty donut shops, or donut “boutiques,” have popped up all around Georgia and we’ve never wanted to have fried dough and icing yumminess for every meal more than we do now! Having tasted a few (dozen) from each, we have compiled a list of the best donut shops that are worth every tank of gas, every early morning, and every single mile you’ll have to run to burn these bad boys off.
Sara Donuts: If you’re ever roaming around Johns Creek, Norcross, or Alpharetta, you have to put this location in Google Maps. Sara's famous red velvet cake and classic chocolate glazed donuts are the best in the area (and top five in the state), and we promise that if you bring a dozen or two to the office, classroom, or birthday party, you will be praised for days.
Athens (we have a tie)
Zombie Coffee and Donuts: Having just opened about a month ago, this cafe in downtown Athens has been swamped with eager donut lovers. If you’re on the pickier side and only like 1 bite of each kind of donut, look no further! Zombie is changing the donut game with its made to order platform, where you can choose the type of dough (regular or cake), type of icing (glazed, strawberry icing, lemon glaze, cinnamon sugar, just to name a few), and toppings (shredded coconut, crushed oreo, pecans, bacon, M&M’s, and more).
Ike & Jane Cafe and Bakery: If you need some protein before you fill up with sugar, Ike & Jane has the perfect breakfast menu to appease both appetites. Pair your Banana Fritter or Lemon Poppy seed Donut with a Scrambled Egg and Bacon or a Roasted Veggie Sandwich. Be sure to wake up early for these treats, they go fast!
Sublime Doughnuts: Their motto, “Eat one that’s worth it” couldn’t go more perfectly with the quality of these doughnuts, other than the fact that you will definitely want to eat a dozen more than one. Famous for their “A-Town Mocha” Doughnut that just screams Atlanta, you will need a plate, fork and knife, and a bunch of napkins when devouring Sublime’s magic (they’re definitely bigger than the size of your face).
Dutch Monkey Doughnuts: If you’re one to check your Instagram feed as soon as your eyes open in the morning and love dessert for breakfast every now and then, you need to follow Dutch Monkey Doughnuts. Not only do they post the flavors of the day each morning, but they also have the wildest flavors you probably have yet to taste- Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake, Key Lime Pie, Pistachio Cake, and of course their famous Dutch Monkey.
Revolution Doughnuts & Coffee: Serving handmade and allergy sensitive doughnuts with all natural ingredients, if you’re Vegan, Gluten-Free, or allergic to dairy, Revolution is your answered prayer. Enjoy a Dark Chocolate Cake, Carrot Cake, Nutella Cream Puff, or Fresh Peach Slider Doughnut (just a few among the many) without regretting it an hour later at one of the most beloved shops in Decatur.
Dough in the Box: Having been around for over a decade and serving over 42 kinds of doughnuts, this family business is a neighborhood favorite. Not to mention, they love celebrating any and every holiday from Teacher Appreciation Week to Earth Day to Graduations with the most creative custom doughnuts.
Da Vinci’s Donuts: If you’re a lover of all things tiny, you will have a field day at Da Vinci’s. Having more toppings yet a smaller size, you can eat two or three of these donuts for the usual guilt of one. Though you can custom order, you must try their classics and gourmet flavors such as Caramel Glaze, Coconut Crunch, or Creamsicle. If your mouth is drooling by now but can’t make it to Sandy Springs, check out their other location in Alpharetta.
